Flow Calibrating a Met One BAM 1020/1022 FEM Sampler
Method 1: Direct Mode
Direct Mode connects the Alicat FP-25 directly to your sampler’s downtube. The pass-through connection most closely replicates sampler operating conditions. The low pressure drop of the Alicat ensures that it is virtually invisible to your air sampler.
- Thread the Direct Mode downtube adapter into the outlet of the FP-25 until its face seal is tight against the flow body.
- Thread the Direct Mode PM inlet adapter into the inlet of the FP-25 until its face seal is tight against the flow body.
- Fit the FP-25 onto the BAM downtube, and place the PM10 inlet on top of the FP-25. If using a PM2.5 cyclone, leave it in place, and fit the FP-25 between it and the PM10 inlet.
- Insert the FP-25 external temperature probe into the sampler’s radiation shield.
- Be sure to tare the Alicat FP-25 before you begin the BAM 1020 or BAM 1022 flow calibration.
Method 2: Standard Mode
Standard Mode connects the FP-25 to any air sampler by means of a hose barb and silicone tubing. FRM and FEM samplers will use their flow audit adapters for this setup.
- Thread the barb fitting into the outlet of the FP-25 until its face seal is tight against the flow body.
- Push the silicone tubing onto the barb.
- Fit the other end of the tubing onto the barb of the BAM flow audit adapter.
- Place the flow audit adapter onto the top of the BAM downtube, or the PM2.5 cyclone if you are using one.
- Insert the FP-25 external temperature probe into the sampler’s radiation shield.
- Be sure to tare the Alicat FP-25 before you begin the BAM 1020 or BAM 1022 flow calibration.
Pressure Monitoring During External Leak Checks
The pass-through setup (Direct Mode) can also be used to provide pressure monitoring during leak check procedures. During the leak check, monitor internal pressure with absolute or gauge reference in the engineering unit of your choosing.
- Thread the Direct Mode downtube adapter into the outlet of the FP-25 until its face seal is tight against the flow body.
- Thread the Direct Mode PM inlet adapter into the inlet of the FP-25 until its face seal is tight against the flow body.
- Fit the FP-25 onto the BAM downtube.

PCU–Gas Flow Portable Calibration Unit
Portable flow calibration with a very wide dynamic range
Order Directly from Alicat
When a single flow meter won’t cover all of your calibration needs, consider using a portable calibration unit (PCU). Alicat’s PCU is a secondary calibration standard that combines up to 3 high-accuracy flow meters of varied ranges (max 500 slpm) with totalizers into a rugged industrial carrying case for go-anywhere portability. PCU’s can be powered by 4 AA batteries or the included AC cable and include a copy of Alicat’s Flow Vision SC™ software.
- Versatile. Quickly calibrate multiple instruments across a combined turndown range of up to 100,000:1 (for example 5 sccm – 500 slpm) with easy push-connect fittings or optional compression fittings.
- Accurate. Measure live flow rates and flow totals with NIST-traceable accuracy (as good as 0.5% reading) for a variety of gases down to 1/1000th of full scale, or define your own gas composition with COMPOSER™.
- Rugged. The PCU houses the flow meters within a rugged hard case and can withstand drops if they should occur.
PCU’s are also available in our “Whisper” configuration with low pressure drop (PCUW series) and 316L configuration for use with corrosive gases (PCUS series).

MBQ–High Pressure Portable Gas Mass Flow Meters
High-pressure flow verification, anywhere you need it
Order Directly from Alicat
The versatile MBQ portable flow meter reduces the time it takes to verify or validate flows that are operating at high pressures (160-320 psia). Instant-on and real-time readings for multiple gases reduce the downtime and disruption to your process.
- Accurate. Calibrate flows with NIST-traceable accuracy for a variety of gases down to 1/50th of full scale, or define your own gas composition with COMPOSER™.
- Efficient. As soon as you power the MBQ on, it’s ready to display live flow, pressure and temperature readings in your choice of engineering units.
- Tough. MBQ series portable flow meters are designed to be carried and can withstand drops if they should occur.
Performance
- Available ranges: max 0-5000 slpm, min 0-0.5 sccm/0-500 sμlm (see Part Numbers tab for stock ranges.)
- Flow measurement range: 0.01% – 100% of full scale.
- Standard accuracy calibration, NIST-traceable: +/- (0.6% of reading on most instruments.)
- Optional high-accuracy calibration, NIST-traceable: +/- (0.5% of reading on most instruments.)
- Repeatability: 0.1% of reading + 0.02% of full scale.
- Typical measurement response time constant: 5-10 ms.
- No warm-up time required.
Operating Conditions
- Compatible gases: 98 (MBQ) or 130 (MBQS) pre-loaded selectable gas calibrations; additional mixtures definable with COMPOSER
- Operating temperature: -10°C to +60°C
- Max internal pressure (static): 305 psig (320 psia)
- Max differential pressure (inlet to outlet): 100 psid
- Proof pressure: 400 psig (415 psia)
- STP/NTP: user-selectable (defaults to 25°C & 1 atm STP/0°C & 1 atm NTP)
In the box
- High-pressure portable mass flow meter (fully charged)
- Micro-USB charging cable and AC wall adapter
- NIST-traceable calibration cesrtificate
- Alicat operating manual
Model Variations
- Aggressive gases (MBQS, see below)
Also available:
- Standard configuration, up to 160 psia (MB)
- Low pressure drop, max 60 psia (MWB)
Corrosive Gases (MBQS series)
Instruments in the high-pressure MBQ series are also available with an optional “S” configuration (MBQS) for use with corrosive gases. In this configuration, we upgrade the flow body and sensor to 316L stainless steel and the elastomers to FFKM.
Build Options
- Communications protocols (RS-232, RS-485)
- Displays (monochrome or color)
- Process connections (NPT, SAE, AN, BSPP/G, welded compression or VCR/VCO fittings)
- Elastomers (Viton, FFKM, EPDM, Silicone)
Alicat’s MBQ series is suitable for use with non-corrosive gases.
