    Taring/auto-taring tutorial

    Setting the tare takes a sensor signal and sets it as zero in flow or pressure. A zero setpoint results in closing of the valve (on controllers) and creates a known “no flow” condition. Many measurement devices need to periodically have tare set to remove errors due to drift. Improperly setting tare (when flow is occurring) will result in inaccurate readings as well, since the flow that was occurring during the tare will be subtracted from the true reading.

    The following instructions show how to set a tare manually using the display buttons. They also show how to toggle the Auto-Tare function, which can be used to tare the flow controller automatically whenever a 0 setpoint occurs.

    “Hi.  My name is Marina Palese, and I’m an App Engineer at Alicat Scientific.  Today, I’m going to show you how to tare your device and how to enable auto-tare.  Let’s get started.”

    To tare our unit from the front panel, we are going to go to the MENU (bottom right button), and then click tares on the top right.  From here, you can see from left to right on the screen: tare pressure, auto-tare on, and tare flow.  You can click any one of these (clicks TARE PRESS top left button) to tare the pressure (by pressing bottom right TARE button and then the bottom right SET button), tare the flow (clicks TARE FLOW top right button, followed by bottom right TARE button and bottom right SET button), or turn auto-tare on and off (toggled by pressing the top middle AUTO TARE button).

    Step-by-step instructions (front panel)

    Flow Tare

    1. Press the top right button for “TARES” selection.
    2. Press the top right button for “TARE FLOW” selection.
    3. Press the bottom right button for “TARE” selection.
    4. Press the bottom right button for “SET” selection.

    Pressure Tare

    1. Press the top right button for “TARES” selection.
    2. Press the top leftbutton for “TARE PRESS” selection.
    3. Press the bottom right button for “TARE” selection.
    4. Press the bottom right button for “SET” selection.

    Auto-Tare

    1. Press the bottom right button for “MENU” selection.
    2. Press the top right button for “TARES” selection.
    3. Press the top middle button to toggle “AUTO TARE” selection on/off.

    NOTE:  Auto-Tare is not available on absolute pressure controllers.
