Projects include improving pilot safety, putting satellites into space, launching rockets, and much more.\n\nOur goal is to understand each customer\u2019s distinct application requirements and find the perfect mass flow or pressure solution to keep important projects moving quickly and smoothly. In this article, we discuss an application where a customer-developed leak test stands for rocket engines.\n<h2>Challenge: Valve leak test stands and characterization for rocket engines<\/h2>\nLeak testing takes place in a lab environment on Earth, designed to simulate conditions in space. These test stands must detect even the smallest of leak rates, requiring high-accuracy mass flow and pressure instrumentation.\n\nOne challenge encountered when selecting test stand equipment is the high operating pressures. Because testing rockets requires such high operating pressures, it can be challenging to find suitable equipment.\n\nA standard pressure controller is unlikely to meet these pressure requirements. Dome-loaded regulators can handle high pressures and high flow rates and are therefore often used to control pressure in testing rocket components. However, these dome-loaded regulators experience significant hysteresis which can result in a non-repeatable process.\n<h2>Solution: Repeatable pressure control and near-atmospheric flow measurement<\/h2>\nTo avoid hysteresis and guarantee repeatability, the team used high-pressure-rated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/pressure\/pressure-controller\/dual-valve-pressure-controllers\/\">dual valve pressure controllers<\/a> (PCDs). These repeatably control pressures up to 3,000 PSI with a proportional control valve optimized using onboard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/pid-tuning-pd-pdf-and-pd2i-tutorial\/\">PID tuning<\/a>. The pressure controllers were additionally paired with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/low-pressure-drop-mass-flow-meters\/\">Whisper low pressure drop flow meters<\/a>.\n\nThe PCD was used to control pressure at the inlet port of the valve under test, and the flow meter was installed downstream to measure the leak rate through the valve. This setup enabled the detection of even the smallest of leaks\u00a0at near-atmospheric pressures.\n\n<iframe title=\"Alicat&#039;s Whisper\u2122 Series: Low Pressure Drop Mass Flow Meters\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DMSabM9BHlw?feature=oembed&rel=0&enablejsapi=1\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\n<span>Pre-loaded\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/documentation\/gas-select-gas-list\/\">multi-gas calibrations<\/a><span>\u00a0allowed for easy switching between the two most common leak-testing gases \u2013 nitrogen and helium \u2013 with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/high-accuracy-multi-gas-calibrations-using-gas-select-feature\/\">no change in accuracy<\/a><span>\u00a0or need for recalibration. Finally, all Alicat pressure and mass flow devices were configured with AS5202 ports for easy system integration.<\/span>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_accordion _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ensuring the oxygen masks in military and commercial airplanes flow the correct amount of gas and meet safety regulations \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-controllers\/\" style=\"color: #000000;\">bidirectional mass flow<\/a>\u00a0controllers simulate human breathing while monitoring system pressure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Flowing water to support and monitor cooling systems in pressure suits and propulsion systems \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/liquid-flow\/\" style=\"color: #000000;\">liquid flow<\/a>\u00a0instruments were customized to be lightweight and compatible with space suits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Controlling the lift of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/fast-achieves-high-altitude-ballooning-goals-using-portable-mass-flow-meters\/\" style=\"color: #000000;\">high-altitude balloons<\/a>\u00a0used in experiments to study and understand weather patterns and various aspects of the upper atmosphere \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/\" style=\"color: #000000;\">mass flow meters<\/a>\u00a0measure hydrogen or helium used to fill the balloon.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Assisting with the pitch, roll, and yaw on a rocket launch delivering an astronomical telescope satellite \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/pressure\/\" style=\"color: #000000;\">pressure controllers<\/a>\u00a0with high-resolution control and smooth ramping aim the scope and prevent image blurring.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Testing instrument performance in harsh Martian conditions \u2013 mass flow and pressure controllers replicate the atmosphere on
