Unfortunately, most hydrogen production utilizes natural gas and releases harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In an effort to improve the sustainability of hydrogen, many researchers have been hard at work developing electolyser technology. Electrolysers are a promising way to produce green energy \u2013 and to accomplish the UN\u2019s goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. While the high cost of renewable energy and technology has previously been a barrier to\u00a0green hydrogen, extensive research and development is breaking down that barrier.\n\n&nbsp;[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<h2>Nel Hydrogen: Changing the hydrogen market<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nelhydrogen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nel<\/a> is a global hydrogen company, delivering optimal solutions to produce, store, and distribute hydrogen from renewable energy. Their roots date back to 1927, and since then, they have had a proud history of development and continuous improvement of hydrogen technologies. Today, their solutions cover the entire value chain: from hydrogen production technologies to hydrogen fueling stations, enabling industries to transition to green hydrogen, and providing fuel cell electric vehicles with the same fast fueling and long range as fossil-fueled vehicles \u2013 without the emissions.\u200b Nel Hydrogen, an industry leader in both Alkaline and PEM electrolysers, sees hydrogen as the future of energy.<\/p>\n<p>Here, Nel explains how their PEM electrolysers produce green hydrogen:<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;95%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;20px|10px|20px|10px|false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px|20px|20px|20px|false|false&#8221; border_width_all=&#8221;1px&#8221; border_color_all=&#8221;#EAEAEA&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<h4><strong>&#8220;PEM water electrolysis simply splits deionized water (H<sub>2<\/sub>O) into its constituent parts, hydrogen (H<sub>2<\/sub>) and oxygen (O<sub>2<\/sub>), on either side of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane. When a DC voltage is applied to the\u202felectrolyser, water fed to the anode (or oxygen electrode) is oxidized to oxygen and protons, while electrons are released. The protons (H+ ions) pass through the PEM to the cathode (or hydrogen electrode), where\u202fthey meet electrons from the other side of the circuit, and are reduced to hydrogen gas.&#8221;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\">\n<div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n<h4>\u2013 Nel Hydrogen<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<h2>Challenge: Verifying a Nel PEM device with Alicat<\/h2>\nBefore Nel Hydrogen installs a PEM device, their team verifies that it produces the proper quantity of hydrogen. This process verification is performed by measuring the flow rate of hydrogen.\n\nHistorically, Nel has used traditional ball-type rotameters to take these measurements. While this got the job done, rotameter technology proved difficult to use and the measurements were not precise enough. They therefore began their search for an easy-to-use, high-precision flow measurement device.\n\n&nbsp;\n<h2>Solution: Mass flow meters to replace rotameters<\/h2>\nNel switched out their rotameters with Alicat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/\">mass flow meters<\/a> to test their <a href=\"https:\/\/nelhydrogen.com\/water-electrolysers-hydrogen-generators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S, H, and C PEM electrolysers<\/a>.\n<div class=\"su-quote su-quote-style-default\">\n<div class=\"su-quote-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n\n<strong>&#8220;This has helped us simplify our test setups, increase reading accuracy\/reduce variability, [and] is much easier for our technicians performing the test.&#8221;<\/strong>\n\n<strong>\u2013 <\/strong>Philep Levesque, Nel Hydrogen manufacturing engineer\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Nel-setup.webp&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Nel-setup&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;50%&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px||20px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<h6 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Nel Hydrogen setup with mass flow meter<\/em><\/h6>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the model, Nel reads either the instantaneous flow rate or the average flow rate over a period of time. Averaging is performed directly by the Alicat, using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/totalizers-batch-dispensing-alarms\/\">totalizer<\/a> flow averaging technology. This enabled Nel\u2019s team to compensate for any oscillation in flow. Switching to Alicats improved the accuracy of measurements and decreased the time it took to verify that a device is working properly.<\/p>\n<h2>Nel\u2019s future plans<\/h2>\n<p>If green hydrogen is to become a viable energy solution, the cost must continue to decrease to compete with fossil-based fuels. Nel is working to scale hydrogen production solutions like PEM electrolysers and produce even larger electrolysis stacks. Meanwhile, the cost of renewable energy continues to decrease, boding well for the hydrogen market overall.
