The optimal concentration of CO<sub>2<\/sub> for most plant species is around 1000 PPM. Here, we discuss the use of mass flow control to regulate CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels and improve indoor growing processes.\n<h2>Using CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas to boost indoor plant yields<\/h2>\nMonitoring and maintaining an indoor CO<sub>2<\/sub> concentration of around 1,000 PPM will maximize the yields of most crops by <a href=\"https:\/\/omafra.gov.on.ca\/english\/crops\/facts\/00-077.htm#intro%3Cbr%3E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">up to 50%<\/a>. However, this must be precisely controlled, as concentrations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kane.co.uk\/knowledge-centre\/what-are-safe-levels-of-co-and-co2-in-rooms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CO<sub>2 <\/sub>at 2,000-5,000 PPM<\/a> can cause headaches and nausea and at 50,000 PPM can lead to loss of consciousness or even death. Therefore, if CO<sub>2<\/sub> is supplemented, precautions must be taken to continuously and accurately raise, lower, and monitor CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels.\n\nThe main components to control CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels in indoors hydroponics systems include the following:\n\n&nbsp;\n\nCO<sub>2<\/sub> is released from the gas source as needed based on set points from the CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitor while amounts of total CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas and their flow rates are controlled using flow meters and controllers. For optimal CO<sub>2<\/sub> control, Alicat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-meters\/\">M<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-controllers\/\">MC-Series<\/a> devices offer gas control and measurement to \u00b10.5% of reading or \u00b10.05% of full scale, a control range of 0.01-100% (10,000:1 turndown), and a flow range up to 5,000 SLPM.\n\nTo eliminate separate flow controllers for inflowing and for outflowing CO<sub>2<\/sub>, Alicat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-controllers\/\">MCD-Series<\/a> of bidirectional gas mass flow controllers provide a process solution where CO<sub>2<\/sub> can be simultaneously added and removed.\n<h2>Using CO<sub>2<\/sub> gas as a natural pesticide<\/h2>\nAnother less common application for CO<sub>2<\/sub> in indoor hydroponic farming systems is as a food-safe natural pesticide. At concentrations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co2meter.com\/blogs\/news\/1518232-can-co2-kill-insects-and-garden-pests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40% or higher<\/a>, 400,000 PPM, CO<sub>2<\/sub> can kill all different types of bugs within 7-15 days and as quickly as 60-120 hours for some species. When used indoors as a fumigant, CO<sub>2<\/sub> reduces levels of oxygen, thus bugs die from asphyxiation.\n\nTo add the CO<sub>2<\/sub> for fumigation, flow controllers and pumps are used, thus reducing the air\u2019s concentration of oxygen. After the process is complete, pumps and flow controllers remove CO<sub>2<\/sub> until the CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitor returns back to an optimal concentration for plant growth around 1,000 PPM.\n<h2>Pairing Alicat mass flow controllers with CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitors<\/h2>\nAlicat\u2019s mass flow controllers offer multiple solutions for communicating with CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitors to fully automate the previous processes. Alicat\u2019s devices can work with PLCs, allowing for pairing with CO<sub>2<\/sub> monitors, providing a wide range of customizable control possibilities.
