When flowing one type of pure gas or gas mixture, this is fairly straightforward. However it is a bit more challenging when flowing gas mixtures with variable compositions, such as in stack gas analysis where the relative concentrations of CO<sub>2<\/sub>, O<sub>2<\/sub>, and NO<sub>x<\/sub> change from day to day. Here we discuss the challenges this presents and analyze common solutions.\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Suboptimal solutions for changing mixtures<\/h2>\n<ul>\n\t<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The first solution is to\u00a0<strong>calibrate a thermal flow meter for nitrogen or air, then apply K-factors to estimate the actual gas flow.\u00a0<\/strong>The problem is K-factors are only valid at specific temperatures, pressures, and flow rates. Corrections therefore become increasingly inaccurate as conditions deviate from these precise conditions. Additionally, K-factors may not be available for every gas mixture.<\/span><\/li>\n\t<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another solution is\u00a0<strong>using a bubble meter or piston prover to validate volumetric flow measurement.<\/strong>\u00a0Given the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-the-difference-between-mass-flow-and-volumetric-flow\/\">volumetric flow<\/a>, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">you can then convert to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-mass-flow\/\">mass flow<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">using a series of tables and calculations with viscosity and compressibility information of the gas mix at a set of temperature and pressure conditions. The downside of this method is the amount of time it takes to obtain the flow measurement and back-calculate the mass flow rates.<\/span><\/li>\n\t<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A third option is to\u00a0<strong>factory calibrate a mass flow meter to an estimated typical gas composition for all verifications.<\/strong>\u00a0While this method may produce a reasonable average, results will be inaccurate when the actual gas mixture deviates from the estimation. Higher accuracy results are possible if calculating flows using the differential viscosity and compressibility of the actual gas mix (known from your analyzer) at the correct ambient pressure and temperature conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Alicat COMPOSER\u2122 to simplify gas mixtures<\/h2>\nAlicat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-meters\/\">mass flow meters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-controllers\/\">mass flow controllers<\/a> provide real-time flow readings for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/documentation\/gas-select-gas-list\/\">98+ pure gases and gas mixtures<\/a>, including up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/gas-select-composer-gas-mix-calibration\/\">20 user defined gas mixtures<\/a>. It is easy to create custom gas mixes using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/digital-displays\/\">backlit display<\/a> or your choice of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/communication-options-for-alicat-instruments\/\">communication protocols<\/a>, and switch between mixtures without the need for recalibration.
