Filters and static orifices have pre-defined curves for the relationship between pressure and flow rate. A customer will most likely want to develop this curve or test a specific <span class=\"search_hit\">filter<\/span> to ensure it agrees with the published data.<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it is useful to control pressure while measuring flow rate or vice versa. The most common technique for <span class=\"search_hit\">filter<\/span> characterization is controlling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-mass-flow\/\">mass flow rate<\/a> while measuring the differential pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Using differential pressure control to characterize a filter<\/h2>\n<p>An Alicat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/pressure\/pressure-controller\/\">differential pressure controller<\/a> is used to characterize a filter\u2019s flow against a pressure drop curve. A 15 PSID pressure controller is used to set the pressure drop across the filter, while a 10 SLPM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/\">mass flow meter<\/a> is used to measure the flow rate required to generate that pressure drop.
