One example is in gas reservoirs, where the reservoir must be pressurized prior to conducting high-speed aerodynamic tests.<\/p>\n<h2>Application requirements<\/h2>\n<p>A customer approached Alicat looking to pressurize a 200 L gas reservoir to 1000 PSIG. The gas held in the reservoir would then be quickly released into a high-speed wind tunnel via a rupture disc, producing a hypersonic flow with a high Mach number.<\/p>\n<p>At such a high pressure, it can be challenging to quickly reach high <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-mass-flow\/\">mass flow rates<\/a> due to valve limitations. This challenge can be circumvented by first using a high-flow bypass valve to pressurize the chamber and then switching to a high-precision pressure controller to maintain pressure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Solution: Custom dual hammerhead valve gauge pressure controller<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Research_PCDH3_638px.webp&#8221; alt=&#8221;Research Dual valve pressure controller&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Research_PCDH3_638px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;70%&#8221; module_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px||20px||false|false&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.23.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<p>For this application, Alicat designed a custom gauge pressure controller with side-by-side hammerhead valves. This device is capable of operating at pressures up to 1000 PSIG, with control response times under 30 ms.<\/p>\n<p>The team was able to bring their reservoir pressure up to 1000 PSIG using two steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pressurize the reservoir chamber through a solenoid valve to 980 PSIG.<\/li>\n<li>Close the valve and finish filling the chamber using the Alicat <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/pressure\/pressure-controller\/dual-valve-pressure-controllers\/\">PCDH-1000 PSIG<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>controller.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This solution led to a highly responsive aerodynamic test process which was more streamlined than the original procedure.
