My name is Michael Whiteside.\u00a0 I\u2019m an Applications Engineer here at Alicat Scientific.\u00a0 In this video, I\u2019m going to show you how to change your pressure controller to inverse control mode.\u00a0 Now, let\u2019s get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you can see with this pressure controller, the control valve is located on the upstream side.\u00a0 This configuration provides downstream pressure control, as the pressure will be regulated to whatever side the sensor is exposed to (points to the downstream side of the controller).\u00a0 We call this configuration a \u201cforward pressure controller\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0A valve located on the downstream side, will result in upstream pressure control, as the sensor is now exposed upstream.\u00a0 We call that configuration a \u201cback pressure controller\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In forward pressure control, the valve will open up to increase pressure, and close to decrease pressure.\u00a0 It is the opposite for back pressure control.\u00a0 With the valve on the downstream side, it will open up to decrease the upstream pressure and close to increase the pressure.\u00a0 Due to this inverse functionality, the device must be told how to properly control the valve position (as in how far it is open) depending on the overall goal.<\/p>\n<p>If you plan on reconfiguring your forward pressure controller to a back pressure controller, the first step is to switch the valve from upstream to downstream.\u00a0 A tutorial on this valve switching process is located on our website (see above).\u00a0 Once the valve is switched, the control algorithm must be changed to inverse control.<\/p>\n<p>In order to change to inverse control, you will add 32768 to register 20.\u00a0 In order to do this, we will hit &#8220;MENU&#8221; (bottom right button), &#8220;ABOUT&#8221; (top middle button), &#8220;DEVICE STATE&#8221; (top middle button), and we see a list of registers here.\u00a0 We will hit &#8220;EDIT&#8221; (bottom middle button), &#8220;EDIT REGSTR&#8221; (top left button), and select register 20 (using the up, down, and select digit buttons).\u00a0 We will hit &#8220;SET&#8221; (bottom right button), and we see register 20 currently has a value of 276.\u00a0 Adding 32768 to this value results in 33044.\u00a0 We will change this to 33044 (using the up, down, and select digit buttons), and we will hit &#8220;SET&#8221; (bottom right button).<\/p>\n<p>That is how to properly change your pressure controller to inverse control mode.<\/p>[\/et_pb_accordion_item][\/et_pb_accordion][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.24.2&#8243; selection.<\/li>\n<li>Use the up, down, and select digit buttons to scroll to &#8220;EDIT REGSTR&#8221; selection.<\/li>\n<li>Use the up, down, and select digit buttons to enter the register number 20.<\/li>\n<li>Press the lower right button for \u201cSET\u201d selection.<\/li>\n<li>Record the current value of the register for safe keeping.<\/li>\n<li>Add 32768 to this value to activate inverse control mode.<\/li>\n<li>Use the up, down, and select digit buttons to enter this new value in register 20.<\/li>\n<li>Press the bottom right button to \u201cSET\u201d this new value.<\/li>\n<li>Power cycle the device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>For older devices (firmware 8 and previous), steps 3 to 5 will have slightly different menu options:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press the top middle button for \u201cABOUT\u201d selection.<\/li>\n<li>Press the top middle button for \u201cDEVICE STATE\u201d selection.<\/li>\n<li>Press the bottom middle button for \u201cEDIT\u201d selection.<\/li>\n<li>Press the top left button for \u201cEDIT REGSTR\u201d selection.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE:\u00a0 Registers can only be changed via the front panel on devices with 8v or newer firmware.\u00a0 Older devices can only edit registers over serial communication.<\/p>\n<h2>Step-by-step instructions (serial)<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Switch valve position using the relevant valve swap tutorial for either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/how-to-swap-the-location-of-any-small-valve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rolamite valves or small valves<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>If you don\u2019t already have a serial terminal application, download Alicat\u2019s pre-configured application <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/documentation\/software-drivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Plug the device in and connect the communication cable to your PC. Open the serial terminal app.<\/li>\n<li>The terminal app will ask you for a COM port. You can find your COM port number in the computer\u2019s device manager.<\/li>\n<li>Set the baud rate to match your Alicat (typically 19200) and hit enter. You should receive a message saying device was connected successfully. If you don\u2019t, double check that the COM port number is correct.<\/li>\n<li>Query register 20 value by typing: <strong>AR20<\/strong> and hit &#8220;ENTER&#8221;.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong>\u00a0We are using a device with a unit ID of \u201cA\u201d. If it were \u201cB\u201d, the command would be BR20.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Add 32768 to whatever value was given, and then write it by typing: <strong>AW20=[new value]<\/strong> and hit ENTER.
