Every instrument and fitting in a line induces some pressure drop.\n\nIn this article, we go into some of the details of pressure drop and discuss how it works with Alicat<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> devices.\n<h2>Calculating pressure drop<\/h2>\nPressure drop is determined by calculating the difference between the pressure of the gas when it enters the instrument and when it leaves the instrument. The easiest way to make this measurement is to plumb the inlet and outlet of the device to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/pressure\/pressure-meter\/pressure-meters\/\">differential pressure transducer<\/a>.\n\nWhen making these measurements, it is important to consider the following:\n<ul>\n\t<li>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-laminar-flow\/\">laminar flow<\/a> conditions, pressure drop is proportional to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/what-is-the-difference-between-mass-flow-and-volumetric-flow\/\">volumetric flow<\/a> rate (doubling the flow rate doubles the pressure drop).<\/li>\n\t<li>When flow is turbulent, pressure drop increases as the square of the volumetric flow rate (doubling the flow rate quadruples the pressure drop).<\/li>\n\t<li>Increasing common mode pressure decreases pressure drop.<\/li>\n\t<li>Pressure drop increases as gas viscosity increases. Since increasing the temperature of the gas increases its viscosity, pressure drop also increases as gas temperature increases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<iframe title=\"Ask Alicat: What Is Pressure Drop?\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FUjrl9AJWWo?feature=oembed&rel=0\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<h2>Maximum pressure drop &#8211; flowing at full-scale<\/h2>\nEach Alicat device <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/technical-reference\/\">specification sheet<\/a> lists the maximum pressure drop at full-scale flow when venting to atmosphere under standard conditions. This pressure drop indicates the minimum amount of inlet pressure needed to run an instrument at full-scale flow while venting to atmosphere.\n\nFor any gas process to work, the available system pressure must be greater than the total pressure drop of the components in the system at the expected operating flow rates and temperatures. If too little pressure is provided at the system inlet, there will not be enough gas pressure to pass through all the components of the process at full-scale flows.\n\nAs an example, a 20 SLPM <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/laminar-dp-mass-flow-controllers\/\">MC-Series mass flow controller<\/a> has a full scale pressure drop of 20 PSID. At pressures &lt; 20 PSIA, the device will be unable to reach full-scale flow.\n<h2>Low pressure drop applications<\/h2>\nIn processes with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/support\/measuring-flow-at-subatmospheric-pressures\/\">little available inlet pressure<\/a> or a large amount of back pressure, it is particularly important to use a device with a low pressure drop. Alicat\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-meter\/low-pressure-drop-mass-flow-meters\/\">Whisper low pressure drop mass flow meters<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alicat.com\/products\/gas-flow\/mass-flow-controller\/low-pressure-drop-mass-flow-controllers\/\">controllers<\/a> have maximum pressure drops as low as 0.07 PSID.\n\nThese devices have a larger flow body and uniquely arranged laminar flow elements, resulting in pressure drops up to 10x lower than standard devices.
